| The region is named for its river, Loire. It extends from the mountains, The Massif Central (close to the Rhone Valley), east to the Atlantic Ocean, and has an overall subtle, temperate climate. Although The Loire is full of small, obscure vineyards, it is also home to many more that you’ve heard of: Sancerre, Pouilly-sur-Loire (famous for its Pouilly-Fume’), Chateau Touraine, Vouvray, Montlouis, Chinon, Anjou and Layon. Contributing to the amazing diversity of these wines are the many river tributaries that the vineyards are situated around. In the southeast of The Loire is the Payes Nantis region, most well known for Muscadet. Muscadets are crisp, young fresh white wines often having a slight hint of bubbles. Unlike other regions of France, there are many varieties of grapes grown in this area: Gamay, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. A second contribution to the variety in wines vinted are the climate and soil variances. Because The Loire covers such a long stretch of land (600 miles), different areas along the river’s route are best suited for different vines. There was a decline in production in this area after phylloxera devastated the vineyards. When this happened, many vineyards were not replanted, contributing to today’s potential for more and higher quality wines from The Loire.
